What You Pay
We don't quote a flat number here because roller jobs vary with how many rollers are shot and whether the track needs straightening along with them. A full set replacement on a double door costs more than swapping four rollers on one side because a cable snapped and the door walked off the track. What we can tell you is that Pittsburg's housing mostly dates from after the mid-1970s into the early 1980s, median year built 1982, which means most doors out here still run original steel rollers on steel track rather than the vinyl-clad stock builders started using later. Steel-on-steel wears the track faster and makes more noise doing it, so the roller job often comes with a track inspection whether you asked for one or not. We'll tell you on site if the track is still true or if it's grooved enough that new rollers alone won't quiet the door down. No invented numbers here - we price after we see the door, not before.
What You Are Seeing
A door built around 1982 that's starting to grind, hop, or shudder two or three feet off the track is almost always telling you the rollers have flat-spotted or the bearings inside them are gone. Steel rollers from that era don't fail quietly - you'll hear a rhythmic clunk that gets worse as the door opens, especially on the first cold run of the day. Mild winters out here mean the hardware isn't fighting ice or heavy frost, so when a roller does fail it's almost always wear and cycle count catching up, not weather damage. If the door jumps the track entirely rather than just grinding, that's usually a bent roller stem or a track bracket that's worked loose over the decades, and that's a different repair than a straight roller swap - we'll say so rather than sell you parts you don't need.
Parts We Carry
We stock nylon rollers with sealed bearings for the quiet upgrade most owners ask for once they hear how loud the original steel ones have gotten, and we carry steel ball-bearing rollers for owners who want to match what's already there or who run a heavier door than nylon is rated for. Given how much of Pittsburg's housing stock sits in that early-80s build window, we bring stem lengths sized for that generation of door as the default on the truck rather than special-ordering them after the fact. One limit worth saying plainly: if the track itself is bent or the drums are worn, new rollers won't fix the noise, and we'll tell you that instead of charging you for a part that won't solve the problem.
